Quick Steam review:
After almost 50 hours I can say I gave this game a fair shake. I've been a rabid Battlefield fan since BF2 and it's my favorite combat MMO outside of realistic tactical sims. I, personally, enjoy the game because it still has that roller coaster action and fluid motion. There's just no other game that does open combat as smoothly and as satisfying. I can't recommend this game to anyone, however, because of its poor performance. My current rig is old, I get that, and I'm not expecting anywhere near high level graphics, but when I can run BF4, BF1, and BFV seamlessly, I don't expect near the level of poor performance that I get from BF2042. I understand that the new game mechanic draws from the processor more rather than the GPU did in the past, and that's what's killing me. It's evident when I leave a 128-player game for a 64-player game and my FPS almost doubles. I think there was too much push to compete with big battle royale mmo's and the devs had to dip into the processor to make theirs bigger. I'm all for innovation but when there's a chip shortage and most of us aren't able to upgrade our rigs anytime soon, this is creating a severe problem. I'm not one to blame the game when I'm obviously running on an antique computer but I don't think this was a good idea.
Beyond that, too much of what we love in BF has changed. Instead of being a faceless soldier, your avatar is now limited to a handful of cartoonish characters, each with a special skill that is locked to that character. So if you like the looks of one but the skill of another, you have to make a choice rather than customizing your own character the way you want. This makes zero sense in a game that has previously been about fighting how YOU want to fight. If you don't want to play as a female character, you may have to just for the perks. Adding insult to that, the characters just look stupid. They're rendered well but MacKay just looks like he was drawn by one of the developer's kids. It gets worse when you and the other three people in your squad all choose the same character, creating an opening screen that looks ridiculous.
The maps are nicely done but they're a little big so get ready for Running Simulator 2.0. The problem is there's very few maps and it's common to cross the same map twice even in a short game session. Some of the flag points had to be redesigned after launch after unfair advantages were discovered so it's good to see devs on top of it. I just wish the whole thing ran better.

I didn't add this on my Steam review but it runs so poorly on my rig I'm just going to give up for now. A buddy loaned me his gaming laptop but when I give it back, that will be it for now. It sucks because it really is a pretty game and it has that magnificent BF chaos when the @#$% really hits the fan, but there's no excuse for pulling the rug out on the fans performance-wise during a chip shortage.
