Sorry you feel that way about Lucifer's Hammer, Tig, I absolutely loved it.
Really enjoying Age of Myth (Legends of the First Empire series) now. It's like ASOIAF (Game of Thrones) lite. There is less characters, and the twists are not quite as exquisite, but all in all, a real page turner with fun storylines, great combat, cool characters, and just a fun fantasy romp.

So I raced through Age of Myth (430 pages or so), and bought the next one in the series, Age of Swords. There is something about these books that keeps them from having the same gravitas as Lord of the Rings or ASOIAF, whether it's characters talking too much like modern people or having modern perspectives, or just the lack of really deep themes, but as far as smooth easy-to-digest entertainment, they are great.

Well, I had the book stolen from me yesterday, so I am out of luck. While doing my paper rounds I had stashed the book (and some headphones) in a seemingly secure place. Guess not, since it was gone when I came back. Now I have to replace the book and my headphones.

Currently reading Mythos by Stephen Fry, a story of the greek myths in his words. Also, just (re-)discovered Goodreads and loving it (aside from the Amazon connection). If any of you are on there, please do add me. www.goodreads.com/user/show/110166034-nicolai-broen

Almost done with Age of Swords. Kinda conflicted about getting the next book in the series. On one hand, he writes really good action and storylines, and the characters are likeable, but on the other, my god, it's so modernized in the worst politically correct way. The autistic former slave girl who was abused as a child invents like every single thing in the history of civilized races, the gimped invalid is training to compete in a race, 5 women cast off their men and go off to conquer dragons with women power, it's just all so processed for modern sensebilities, it makes me cringe.

Finished Age of Swords. Skipping on the rest of the series for now for previously mentioned reasons.
Started reading Glen Cook's Black Company series, with the first book. Very gritty and grimdark so far, a washed up company of mercenaries struggling to survive in a decaying pseudo-Roman setting. Everyone is either a complete asshole or half-crazy.

Really enjoying Black Company now. Glen Cook has a very terse writing style, which is basically the exact opposite of Stephen King, so even though the book seems short (about 325 pages), reading 10 pages in it is the equivalent of reading 300 with King. Stuff is always happening, but it's also not some mindless action romp either, everything is just very tight. Absolutely loving the atmosphere and the character so far.

So, I am using the aforementioned Mythos as a way to ease myself into a study routine. My mentor has given me permission to pick up another book for leisure reading.
A Map of Days Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #4 by Ransom Riggs
I enjoyed the previous 3 books in the series.

Ok, I finished The Black Company. Instantly bought the second book in the series, Shadows Linger. Absolutely loved the first book. It's a very interesting take on the genre, where you spend the entire book seeing things from the perspective and narrative of a mercenary from a black-hearted sellsword company which betrays its former employer and works for somebody kinda like Sauron. And still manages to be somewhat likeable and sympathetic. Possibly the grittiest and darkest fantasy world I've ever read about, but with a nice twist at the end, to make you all warm and fuzzy.

That sounds good. I'll have to add it to my list and see if I can find those.
My local library had another book sale not long ago, so loaded up on a bunch more of David Drake novels. Most of the RCN (Republic of Cinnabar Navy) series, plus a few extra stand-alones. Sadly for as many books as they had it was mostly leftovers from last time plus a lot I wasn't interested in.
Just started reading his book Redliners. Just read the first chapter and it looks really good. It's a sci fi mercenaries setting. Very gritty, and based upon his Vietnam experiences.

Is Taibi talking about himself in the third person?
I enjoyed the Black Company books more as they went on. At first his writing style drove me a bit nuts - he doesn't explain very much so he drops all these things in that make absolutely no sense, and you sit there trying to decide if it's just coming out of left field or if he said something about it earlier in the book and you just forgot (hint, it's the former).
Then later in the series it just gets very predictable, everybody doing the same things, making the same in-jokes, it got kind of boring.
I probably read... 5? 6? Of them before losing interest. Might get back into them at some point.
